The world has its attention turned towards Somalia at the moment. This time, unlike in the past, the focus is positive, optimistic and forward-looking. In simple terms, the world understands that this is the take-off moment for Somalia.

This ‘New Somalia’ has unique needs. A new set of skills is needed; a new mind-set fed on new information, and a new approach at handling day-to-day activities. The Somalia Investor magazine is here to meet the information needs of the business person in the country, the one abroad, and the curious regular person who wants to know what goes on in the business community in Somalia. From Europe to America, from China to India, and from South Africa to Madagascar, economists, risk managers, industrialists, bankers, general businessmen and regular people cannot stop talking about ‘the New Somalia’. Whether they are drawing graphs to qualify their assertion in boardrooms or waving up their hands to drive that point home by the roadside, the passion and the earnestness of the conversation about ‘the New Somalia’ is universal.

As a nation, Somalia is poised for take off. As a people, the Somali community is ready. As a market, this is every investor’s dream. Somalia is open and ready for business. The business community is eager and willing to engage with the world. Inside this magazine, we have compelling stories about individuals who are doing business in Somalia. We have excerpts of interviews with investors (both locals and foreigners), who flew into Somalia three or four years ago and have lived to reap the benefits. We have success stories about Somalis who have returned from abroad and have taken the leap of faith to partner with locals or stand on their own in business establishments that are not only doing well, but are also defining the direction that the country is taking. That is what to expect as you turn the leaves of this publication.

However, ‘The New Somalia’ is not only about business. It is about the people, the infrastructure, the opportunities, the chances and more importantly, the positive spirit carried at the heart of every individual walking the streets of Mogadishu or in the villages. It is a spirit that craves for a better world. The country is ready and will, with open arms, welcome anyone that shares the same dream. The Somalia Investor seeks to captures the essence of this spirit — this new Somali spirit.

The Somalia Investor mission is to present cutting-edge business information for Somalis in the Diaspora and those at home, and other investors. From this issue to the subsequent ones, the aim is to make this the most dependable source of business information for anyone interested in Somalia. Welcome…
