Michael Nithavrianakis Appointed UK Ambassador to Somalia

Mr. Michael Stephen Nithavrianakis MVO has been appointed the new United Kingdom ambassador to Somalia replacing Ms. Kate Foster OBE who will take up another Diplomatic service appointment. He will commence his duties on May 2023.

Nithavrianakis has extensive experience having held various top-level positions in several countries throughout his career. He has worked in Moscow, Kuala Lumpur, Accra, Riyadh, Chennai, Greece, etc.

Prior to his appointment, Nithavrianakis was the HM Consul General & Director of Trade & Investment in Italy. Before that, he was the Deputy High Commissioner and Director of Trade & Investment in Pakistan.

Additionally, he has served as the Acting Deputy Head of Mission-Kabul,  South Asia & Afghanistan Directorate-FCO, Managing Director of Castle Gordon Global Advisory Limited, Deputy High Commissioner in Chennai,  Deputy Head of Mission, and HM Consul-General-Athens among others.

Starting in May, Nithavrianakis will take up Foster’s roles in Somalia. Foster has been the UK’s ambassador to Somalia since 2021 having taken over from Mr. Ben Fender OBE.

During her tenure, she supported the government’s military offensive against Al-Shabaab through military training, logistical support, etc. Foster also backed humanitarian efforts in the country.
