Moussa Faki, the Chairman of the African Union, is expected to travel “immediately” to Sudan to address the ongoing political turmoil and unrest. In response to the violence and chaos in Sudan, Faki will “engage the parties towards a ceasefire,” according to a statement released by the AU on Sunday.
After an emergency meeting, the conflict and security organ of the bloc said it “requests the chairperson of the AU commission to continue using his good offices to engage with the parties to the conflict in order to facilitate dialogue and peaceful resolution of the conflict in Sudan, and commends his commitment to immediately travel to Sudan to engage the parties towards a ceasefire.”
The pan-African body also expressed “grave concern and alarm” and called on the warring parties to protect civilians, especially women and children.
Additionally, the warring parties in the country were urged to “quickly adopt a peaceful solution and an inclusive dialogue to resolve their differences” and “firmly reject any external interference that could complicate the situation in Sudan.”
On his end, Faki encouraged Sudan’s battling sides to end hostilities and stop harming their country.
This came after fighting raged in the country, resulting in numerous lives and infrastructure destruction.
The conflict arose from a proposed transition from a military to a civilian government, leading to a power struggle between the country’s de facto ruler, Gen Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, and former warlord Gen Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, also known as Hemedti. The Sudanese armed forces loyal to Burhan clashed with the paramilitaries of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), a collection of the militia who follow Hemedti.
With no end to the fighting in sight and the death toll rising, several countries have advised their citizens to contact their respective embassies and stay indoors.
Similarly, The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation has also urged Somali citizens in Sudan to contact the ministry and the embassy and register on the ministry’s website if they require assistance.
“They can register on the ministry’s website if they need help,” the ministry said.
