ADDIS ABABA (SMN) – Somali president Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has held a meeting with his Nigerian counterpart Muhammadu Buhari in Addis Ababa, the Ethiopian capital.
The two leaders met on Sunday on the sidelines of the AU’s 36th summit in Addis Ababa.
According to Villa Somalia, Mohamud and Buhari discussed a range of issues, mainly counter-terrorism as the two countries face Al-Shabaab and Boko Haram, an ISIS affiliate.
Somali leaders praise Nigeria’s selflessness and continues support to his nation as a troop-contributing country to the African Union Mission [ATMIS], which fights Al-Shabaab.
Nigeria is one of the Police Contributing Countries to ATMIS. The country first deployed police officers in Somalia in 2010 during the first phase of the war against the militants.
Among the AU police duties, the officers work on providing VIP escort and protection services, training and assisting the SPF in public order management, conducting joint patrols with their Somali counterparts, and securing key government installations and high-level events. In the statement, Mohamud added that Somalis would not forget Nigeria’s sacrifice and role in the stabilization of the country after three decades of bloody conflict and terrorism.1
