Ten days after a devastating earthquake struck Turkey and Syria, the death toll has risen to over 40,000 and is still rising. Even as the chances of survival continue to dwindle, rescue organizations are working around the clock to locate any remaining survivors. Surprisingly, more than a week after the deadly earthquake, rescuers are discovering people still alive beneath the rubble. For instance, a 77-year-old woman was pulled from the rubble yesterday, more than 200 hours after the earthquake.
Nonetheless, the Turkish people are facing a massive humanitarian crisis, with the majority of earthquake survivors being homeless and without food and water in freezing weather. Consequently, Several countries and organizations from around the world have decided to lend a helping to the country.
Similarly, Somalia has decided to support the Turkish people. Somalia’s Prime Minister, Mr. Hamza Abdi Barre, has established a national-level emergency relief committee for this purpose. The 11-member committee will coordinate efforts to provide aid and relief to Turkey.
The Prime Minister selected the committee’s 11 members in collaboration with the president, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, Mr. Hassan Macallin Mohamud, Minister of Justice and Constitution; Mr. Ahmed Moalim Fiqi, Minister of Interior, Federal Affairs, and Reconciliation; and Mr. Farah Sheikh Abdulkadir, Minister of Education, Culture, and Higher Education, are among the members.
The committee also includes Sheikh Bashir Ahmed Salad, Sheikh Abdulkadir Somow, Sultan Abdiqani Qorane, Omar Hassan Mohamed, Ahmed Mohamud Yusuf, Ahmed Shirwac Mohamed, Dunya Mohamed Ali, and Prof. Hussain Liman.
On their end, the Somali people sympathize with their Turkish brothers over the crisis that has befallen them. Just last week, Somali Disaster Management Agency (SODMA) officials paid a solidarity visit to the Turkish embassy in Mogadishu. In the same spirit, the Prime Minister established the committee to assist Turkey, as it had previously done for Somalia.
