The United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) has launched five new projects in Iraq, Somalia, South Sudan, the State of Palestine, and Ukraine, with the support of US$3 million in funding from Japan's supplementary budget. The projects aim to provide urgent support for inclusive and sustainable industrial development in these partner countries.

South Sudan’s Economic Ruin Looms as Sudan Conflict Threatens Oil Exports

As fighting in Sudan continues, neighboring South Sudan faces an economic crisis due to the potential threat the conflict poses to its main source of revenue – oil exports. With oil accounting for over 90 percent of the government budget and 70 percent of the GDP, any disruption to oil exports would be catastrophic for the already struggling economy, which is suffering from high inflation and a high risk of debt distress.

Somalia: Government Evacuates Somalis Stranded in Sudan as Conflict Escalates

In response to the conflict between the Sudanese army and paramilitary forces, Somalia has begun evacuating its citizens who are stranded in Sudan. On Wednesday, eighteen Somalis were successfully evacuated from Buluja, a town near Sudan's border with South Sudan, and arrived at Mogadishu's Aden Adde Airport. Abdirahman Nur Dinari, the acting permanent secretary of Somalia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, expressed his gratitude to the Somali embassies in Sudan, South Sudan, and Ethiopia for their efforts in evacuating citizens.
